Matthew commenced employment at Hellier McFarland in 2002 as a graduate land surveyor before returning to university to pursue a postgraduate degree in town planning.
Through his active and continued involvement in both the land survey and town planning sectors, Matthew has attained a comprehensive understanding of the land and property development industry. It is by drawing upon this extensive knowledge that Matthew has delivered outstanding results time and time again for a broad range of clients over almost two decades.
Upon his appointment as managing director of Hellier McFarland in 2010, Matthew instilled a vision for Hellier McFarland to become the most respected land survey and town planning company in Victoria; a commitment which constantly drives Matthew and one that is embraced by the Hellier McFarland team.
Matthew is a natural leader with an astute business acumen, personable nature and a commitment to achieve the best possible outcome for his clients. As a result, he is a highly respected consultant who provides well considered, meaningful and practical advice, with confidence and a smile.
Karen joined the Hellier McFarland team as finance manager in 2019.
Karen has a degree in accounting and business law, a graduate diploma in business administration and is currently studying the CPA program.
Karen has experience in financial and management accounting, working for companies in the banking sector, telecommunications, luxury goods and the smash repair industry.
Karen has a passion for delivering quality and accurate reporting and will work hard to provide added value to the finance manager role at Hellier McFarland – adopting a can-do attitude which is greatly appreciated by those that work with her.
Nic commenced with Hellier McFarland in 2021, bringing with him over 30 years’ experience in the land surveying, development and property sectors. Trusted consultant and adviser to a wide range of clients, including those involved with residential and commercial developments, building and land subdivisions, Nic has extensive knowledge in dealing with complex land titling issues, and the structure & staging of Owners Corporation subdivisions.
Nic’s broad range of property industry experience enables him to take a holistic view of the challenges and opportunities associated with many development projects
He has taken the lead survey consultant role in many blue chip projects to deliver thorough and timely service and advice, critical to their success.
Nic continues to serve as Board Member of the Association of Consulting Surveyors Victoria, with special interests in the training and development of current and future generations of surveyors.
Matt initially joined Hellier McFarland as a senior surveyor having over 13 years’ experience in the Victorian surveying industry across cadastral and construction disciplines, including at a management level.
Matt’s experience covers all fields of land surveying, including engineering, construction, cadastral and 3D scanning.
Matt also has a background in business development and client liaison, with experience managing large teams of surveyors.
Matt is a born leader, who thrives in making survey that client expectations are exceeded on each and every project. Matt is our business development manager and is responsible for client development, engagement, tendering and marketing of the broad range of Hellier McFarland’s capabilities in the land survey, town planning and development sectors.
Matt’s positive demeanour and hard-working approach means that all projects are met with enthusiasm and a confidence that leaves the client happy in their experience with Hellier McFarland.
Nathan is our construction Survey Manager with significant expertise in construction and engineering surveying, both here at home in Victoria and in more remote areas of Australia on large infrastructure projects.
Having joined the team at Hellier McFarland early in 2017, Nathan has played an integral role in expanding the increasing portfolio of construction and infrastructure survey work undertaken by our business and manages a team of specialist construction surveyors who work on industrial, commercial and residential construction set-out.
Nathan is a thorough and balanced professional who always has a smile on his face and thinks quickly on his feet to resolve challenges faced by clients on their development projects.
Jesvin is a savvy, fast-thinking and bright young individual, charged with managing the IT needs of Hellier McFarland.
Looking to innovate the team’s information and communication technology solutions, Jesvin constantly proposes new and exciting ways to carry out business in more efficient and user-friendly ways with forethought and a calm and friendly demeanour.
Jesvin’s IT knowledge is extensive, swiftly responding to any problem with enthusiasm and ease.
With over 25 years’ experience in the surveying industry as a licensed surveyor, Ray’s survey knowledge covers a wide variety of disciplines. Ray’s expertise has seen him actively involved in a diverse range of projects, from the subdivision of medium to high-density multi-staged building projects with multiple owner's corporations, to providing detailed cadastral (title) advice and solutions.
It is due to Ray’s proficiency, expertise and ability to manage the most complex cadastral projects that he is trusted and relied upon by private clients and many government and corporate bodies such as Municipal Councils, South East Water, VicRoads and the Office of the Surveyor General.
Ray regularly provides expert evidence as a licensed surveyor at VCAT and through the courts.
Ray is highly respected by his peers and is an examiner of professional training agreement projects, giving back to the industry.
Ray also manages Geomet, a collaboration of four survey companies specifically set up to undertake large infrastructure projects for VicRoads.
Ray has a passion for maintaining exemplary standards as a licensed surveyor and mentors our up-and-coming surveyors through their professional development.
Having become licensed in early 2019, Andrew oversees a multitude of Hellier McFarland’s cadastral projects with a focus on residential and industrial land subdivisions.
Andrew has also played an integral role in combining traditional and emerging technologies (such as terrestrial laser scanning) working directly with clients at all stages of a project’s lifecycle to ensure the needs of every client and unique assignment are realised and fulfilled.
Because of the variety of projects, he is responsible for managing, and his active “hands on” approach to his work, Andrew has cultivated a comprehensive land survey knowledge base.
Andrew is an amiable, hard-working, thorough and knowledgeable licensed surveyor, who works tirelessly to deliver exceptional outcomes to clients in a timely manner.

With substantial experience working at reputable land survey and town planning firms in eastern Melbourne, Joel joined the Hellier McFarland team in 2016 as a senior land surveyor.
Joel has an approachable, calm and friendly demeanour, and is thorough and comprehensive in his completion of projects - ensuring that all client expectations are satisfied. Joel is an integral member of staff, providing guidance and assistance to both young and experienced surveyors alike.
Joel is soon to complete his professional training agreement and becoming licensed as a surveyor, an important qualification that befits his level of experience and knowledge.
As a Senior Licensed Surveyor, Stephen supports the Hellier McFarland Engineering team and is responsible for coordinating the Cadastral Team. Steve oversees internal staff members, he liaises with land surveyors, developers, architects, builders and town planners as part of his role.
Holding a Bachelor of Engineering (Geomatics) and having worked in the industry in various positions (including as Director of his own surveying business for over 15 years) means Stephen can share his vast knowledge as a leader and trainer at Hellier McFarland.
A member of the SSSI, ACSV and an examiner for the Surveyor’s Board of Victoria, Stephen is known for his reasonable manner, good listening skills and appreciation of others. His experience at Hellier McFarland extends across multiple projects, including many high rise building projects in Melbourne, where he acted as the signing License Surveyor.
Luke has been with Hellier McFarland for over 10 years, commencing as a survey assistant and evolving into the integral position of subdivision manager. He is a proud member of our 10+ year loyalty club.
In the role of subdivision manager, Luke is responsible for managing a significant number of Hellier McFarland’s subdivision projects and acting as the leading expert of SPEAR.
Luke has thrived in this position of responsibility, implementing a structured and well organised subdivision management system that follows each project from inception to completion in a timely manner, ensuring prompt settlements on the sale of resultant lots.
Luke’s congenial attitude, experienced insight and rapport with Council officers and contacts with referral authorities throughout most municipalities in Victoria add to the success of his management systems, and he is endlessly praised for being a pleasure to deal with.
Andrew has been with Hellier McFarland since the latter stages of his university degree, transitioning into a full-time role upon graduation. Whilst developing his cadastral and traditional land survey knowledge and skills, Andrew is particularly keen on emerging technologies and is playing an important role in establishing our significant expertise with terrestrial laser scanning and modelling techniques.
Andrew has an inquisitive nature and an aptitude for investigating a variety of methods of resolving spatial issues, which has resulted in establishing a wide range of advanced and “left field” methods for obtaining and delivering survey data to meet specific client needs. Andrew thrives in all responsibilities he is entrusted and is an example of Hellier McFarland’s philosophy of encouraging every member of our dynamic team to explore new things and create their own career path.
Chris joined the Hellier McFarland team in 2015 as a Project Manager/Urban Designer.
With a background in engineering drafting and urban design, Chris brings a fresh set of skills to our drafting team.
Although he had never worked as a draftsperson in a land surveying firm before, Chris took no time at all to transition to drafting complex plans of building subdivision and existing conditions survey plans to the highest standard, and in a timely manner.
Chris consistently delivers neat, clear and succinct plans that set a new bench mark for the high-quality plans that Hellier McFarland is renowned for.
Given his background in land development and urban design Chris is also responsible for managing some of our multi stage land subdivision projects, which he does with confidence and professionalism.
Cameron joined Hellier McFarland in early 2018 and brought with him a wealth of experience in terrain modelling, orthomosaic imagery and asset recording. Cameron has his UAV (drone) license and has helped Hellier McFarland delve into less explored surveying methods to meet the growing needs of our clients.
Cameron is adaptable, resourceful and has a “can-do” attitude that is respected by his peers and clients alike.
We welcomed Anthony to our construction team in 2018 as a senior construction surveyor. Anthony has considerable surveying experience in industrial, commercial and residential construction set-out, feature surveys, as-built surveys, earthworks surveys and infrastructure projects. He also has experience as a project coordinator.
Anthony approaches everything he does with a positive and hardworking attitude and possesses great interpersonal and professional skills which are highly valued at Hellier McFarland.
Julie is an experienced town planner, having worked with both local government and in private consultancy in a range of statutory and strategic roles.
With a broad knowledge and interest in heritage and conservation matters, Julie approaches each town planning challenge with enthusiasm and passion to resolve the issue at hand in a practical manner to addresses client needs.
Julie plays an important role in our town planning group and has an attention to detail that enables her to prepare assessments and reports across the full gamut of town planning applications, from VCAT and supreme court covenant matters, to planning panel submissions and statutory planning permit applications.
Hamish has been with Hellier McFarland for several years and has developed a reputation as a go-to person. With an impressive work ethic and a willingness to do whatever it takes, Hamish undertakes every project asked of him with fervour and dedication to ensuring that it is completed to the highest standard. It is this unrelenting drive, coupled with his composed demeanour and approachable nature that makes Hamish a highly-valued member of our survey team. He is currently undertaking a Professional Training Agreement towards becoming a Licensed Surveyor.

Christian joined the Hellier McFarland team in early 2019 as senior land surveyor with previous experience at a large surveying,engineering, architectural and town planning firm.
Christian is enthusiastic about working within an innovative and flexible team at Hellier McFarland and is working towards becoming a licensed surveyor.
Christian prides himself on his good interpersonal and communication skills and working hard to provide the ideal solution for his clients.
David joined us in 2018 as a survey assistant and has quickly proven to be a highly valued member of our team. Having developed his field and office skills, he has become a land surveyor and is a mentor to other survey assistants.
David is also responsible for managing our equipment and supplies, including servicing of vehicles. David is adaptable and reliable, demonstrating a professional approach with a mature attitude, and is quickly proving to be a key member of our survey team.
Dale graduated from university in 2016 and immediately commenced work with Hellier McFarland.
He has developed his knowledge such that he is leading projects in the field and office. He shows excellent diligence in the processing of jobs and can be relied upon to deliver a project with a high degree of quality.
Glenn started with Hellier McFarland whilst completing his master’s degree and has transitioned from a graduate to a very reliable experienced surveyor over the last few years. He has also entered into a professional training agreement to become a Licensed Surveyor.
He is enthusiastic and committed to provide accurate and thorough spatial solutions to clients. He continues to expand his land survey knowledge and experience by involving himself as a party leader in a wide range of cadastral and infrastructure projects.
With previous experience as a survey assistant in cadastral teams at Hellier McFarland, Terry has found his passion for construction surveying and is proving to be a valuable member of our specialist construction survey team.
Terry continues to develop his field and office skills in this area and has the ability to work autonomously to provide our A grade clients with the outcomes that they expect.
With nearly two decades of experience, Tom brings in a range of skills across surveying and contract management. His daily activities see him liaising with Project Managers, Construction Site Managers, Client Contract Administrator, and the wider HMF team.
With a clear understanding of the surveying process for construction, Tom played an essential role in HMF overseeing the development of contracts for a major construction project which will keep several of our surveyors actively occupied for at least two years.
Always professional in his approach, Tom is driven to ensure contracts deliver win/win outcomes for all stakeholders. He enjoys being part of a thriving business and sharing his industry knowledge and experience to help HMF stay at the top of its game.
Tom is an essential part of the team at HMF thanks to his warm nature, attention to detail and end to end involvement in the contracts process.
With close to ten years of experience, Trent takes responsibility for completing field and office work for cadastral and feature surveys at Hellier McFarland. His work sees him liaising with site managers and underground service locators before providing accurate and detailed plans to architects, engineers, developers and landowners.
Holding a Bachelor of Applied Science (Surveying) (Honours) from RMIT, Trent is currently completing his Professional Training Agreement (PTA), with the Surveyors Registration Board of Victoria, with a view to becoming a Licensed Surveyor.
Trent act as the party leading surveyor and been responsible for completing field and office work on a number of key projects in the metro and regional areas.
Approachable and always willing to help, Trent enjoys collaborating with and learning from the industry-leading professionals at Hellier McFarland. Trent has an eye for innovation and provides valuable suggestions to continually improve the processes.
A Certificate IV in Surveying from RMIT and a six-year career in the industry has given Jake a cross-section of experience across warehouse, council and cadastral projects.
In his role as construction surveyor at Hellier McFarland, Jake works alongside builders and architects to set out gridlines, precast panels and columns on complex high rise building projects across Melbourne. The major projects he has worked on include 62 and 65 storey buildings in the CBD.
Jake’s colleagues and peers find him to be a team player who is always willing to help out and takes a professional approach in order to get the job done.
Hoang is part of the Cadastral team, handling subdivisions, reestablishments and asset recording. He comes to Hellier McFarland with ten years of experience, having worked as a Cadastral and Engineer Surveyor on a variety of commercial and residential projects.
Since joining HMF, Hoang has been an active member of the well-structured and organised surveying team. He has built on his skills by taking responsibility for everything from fieldwork to producing the final plans of several large-scale future development sites.
Able to determine lease areas, take internal measurements and handle projects including multi-unit and road setouts, Hoang is an asset to every project. He is always open to discovering new best practices and treats others with respect while maintaining a positive attitude. He appreciates the friendly, supportive environment at HMF and is leveraging his time with the business to continue his professional development.
As a construction surveyor at Hellier McFarland, Luke typically works with site managers, a variety of trades, landowners and other stakeholders.
Holding an Advanced Diploma of Surveying and having spent eight years as a land surveyor, Luke has worked on cadastral, greenfield and topographic projects. He also has experience with drone and 3D laser scanning, making him a well-rounded surveyor who can apply his skills to a cross-section of projects.
Luke approaches every task with a positive attitude and a strong work ethic. Since joining Hellier McFarland in 2020 he has become a valued member of the team thanks to his commitment to collaboration and quality service.
As a land surveyor, Jacob is responsible for undertaking surveys, producing plans and liaising with the wider team on multi-faceted large scale development projects.
Jacob worked as a technical assistant in the agriculture industry before completing a Bachelor of Applied Science (Surveying) (Honours) and joining Hellier McFarland in 2019. He is motivated to learn and develop his skills as he works alongside more senior team members.
Optimistic and always professional in his approach, Jacob has rapidly developed a strong understanding of the surveying process so he can meet the requirements of stakeholders including architects, engineers and developers.
